Domain Name
A domain name is your internet address, such as "yourname.com".
Much like giving out your home address, you give out your
domain name when you want people to visit.
When we setup your domain on our servers both http://yourdomain.com
and http://www.yourdomain.com will be pointed to your account.
Multiple Domain Names
With some plans you will be able to use multiple domain names
to point to the same account. This is beneficial if you own
mycompany.com and mycompany.ca.
Bandwidth
Within the web hosting industry, bandwidth is the measurement
of the amount of data transferred to/from your domain. There
are many different ways bandwidth can be measured and you
should check with any potential companies to determine their
method.
A word of caution about unlimited bandwidth. Companies that
advertise unlimited bandwidth have in their fine print a bandwidth
limit. Usually this bandwidth limit is less then the advertised
bandwidth limit of most other hosting companies.
Disk Space
The amount of physical storage space allocated under each
plan. Storage space includes your web pages, graphics, email
and any additional files you have stored on the server.
Chili!Soft ASP - Active Server
Pages
A specification for a dynamically created webpage with an
.ASP extension that utilizes ActiveX scripting. When a browser
requests an ASP page, the Web server generates a page with
HTML code and sends it back to the browser. So ASP pages are
similar to CGI scripts, but they enable Visual Basic programmers
to work with familiar tools.
Chili!Soft ASP is a linux distribution of ASP provided by
Sun Microsystems.
Anonymous FTP
A method for downloading public files using the File Transfer
Protocol (FTP). Anonymous FTP is called anonymous because
you don't need to identify yourself before accessing files.
In general, you enter the word anonymous when the host prompts
you for a username. Generally your email address is the acceptable
password.
Anonymous FTP is a separate area from your web site. Your
web site files are NOT accessible via anonymous FTP. The only
files that are accessible via anonymous FTP are the files
that you, as a site administrator place in the anonymous FTP
area.
Unique IP Address
With some accounts you will be able to get your own unique
static IP address. An IP address is an identifier on the internet
for a computer. Servers are able to use multiple IP addresses
for multiple web sites. So by having your own IP address for
your account, if you typed in your IP address 192.197.xxx.xxx
you will be able to connect to your website.
FTP Access
File Transfer Protocol is a very common method of moving
files between your computer and your website. FTP is a special
way to login to another computer for the purpose of retrieving
and/or sending files. Using an FTP program you can also update
(delete, rename, move, copy) files on your website.
Secure Server Support (SSL)
Secure Sockets Layer is a protocol for transmitting private
documents. SSL works by using a public key to encrypt data
that's transferred over the SSL connection. Many websites
use the protocol to obtain confidential user information,
such as credit card numbers. By convention, webpages that
require an SSL connection start with https: instead of http:.
Our server supports up to 128 Bit SSL encryption.
Perl5 / CGI
Common Gateway Interface is a set of rules that describe
how a web server communicates with another piece of software
on the server. Usually a CGI program is a small program written
in Perl or C that takes data from a web server and does something
with it, like putting the content of a form into an e-mail
message, or turning the data into a database query.
PHP4 Support
PHP is a tool that lets you create dynamic web pages. PHP
enabled webpages are treated just like regular HTML pages
and you can create and edit them the same way you normally
create regular HTML pages. PHP is a server-side, HTML embedded
scripting language.
MySQL Support
MySQL is the world's most popular Open Source Database, designed
for speed, power and precision in mission critical, heavy
load use. The MySQL database server is the world's most widely
used open source database. Its ingenious software architecture
makes it extremely fast and easy to customize.
Front Page 2000 Extensions
Microsoft FrontPage is a software program used to create
and manage web pages. FrontPage requires the installation
of the FrontPage extensions on your web site. All of our plans
include the FrontPage extensions free of charge.
Server Side Includes
A type of HTML comment that directs the web server to dynamically
generate data for the webpage whenever it is requested. SSIs
can also be used to execute programs and insert the results.
They therefore represent a powerful tool for web developers.
Shell Access
Using telnet or preferably SSH to access your server is the
same as using the console which is directly connected to the
server, there is virtually no difference.
Pico / Vi
Text editors that run under linux that are very useful in
editing CGI applications, or editing any other files in your
website directory.
Multimedia
Shockwave, Flash, Realvideo, and Realaudio are all multimedia
tools that allow you to enhance the look, feel, and functionality
of your website.
Weekly Backups
All user data is backed up once a week. This allows us to
keep backups of user data just incase files aren't able to
be recovered.
Detailed Statistics
We also know how important it is to each client that they
have up to date information on how their website is performing.
With Paradox Web Hosting you will have access to detailed
site statistics which are run every night, so that they are
up to date just for you.
Each site has its own protected stats directory which contains
a main stats summary page (seen at right), and a page for
each month with further detailed information with graphs and
charts. Information such as hits, individual visitors, country's,
top pages, top search engines, referrers, etc. is all displayed
for each month.
POP Accounts
E-mail has exploded in popularity in recent years because
it is fast, flexible, reliable and inexpensive. POP email
accounts are individual email storage accounts (yourname@yourcompany.com).
You can use an email program on your computer or use our built
in web based email to check these accounts.
Email Aliases
Simply put, an email alias is another name that an email
account will accept email for. Suppose, for example, John
Doe has an email account of johndoe@yourdomain.com. John performs
the CEO, sales and marketing duties of his company. Instead
of creating separate email accounts for each duty, email aliases
may be created. When a client then sends an email to CEO@yourdomain.com
the mail gets directed to johndoe. Likewise for sales, marketing.
Each of our hosting plans allows any user to have an unlimited
number of aliases.
Email Forwarding
Email Forwarding is the ability to automatically send (forward)
incoming email to another email account. For example, if you
have a email address for home, such as smithfamily@home.com,
you can have your email account on your website forward its
mail to smithfamily@home.com.
Catch-All Email Accounts
A catchall email is an email account that 'catches' any email
not specifically addressed to another user. Having a catchall
account insures that all mail addressed to your domain will
be delivered to someone at your domain, even if the actual
recipients name is misspelled.
Auto Responders
An auto responder is a message automatically sent to individuals
that send you an email message. Generally this message is
a confirmation that the senders message arrived however, an
auto responder can be set to send any message you desire.
Also, if you go on vacation, you can use an auto responder
to let people know that you won't be able to reply to their
emails for a while.
Mailing Lists
A list of email addresses identified by a single name, such
as mail-list@yourdomain.com. When an email message is sent
to the mailing list name, it is automatically forwarded to
all the email addresses in the list.
Web Based Email
Our web based email system allows you to check your email
through an web browser just by visiting our website. This
is useful if you are needing to check your email and you are
away from your home computer.
Personal Mail Server
Having a personal mail server for your domain name means
your mail isn't sent under our domain name or your ISP's domain
name, it is sent using your domain name. Sending mail in your
domain name provides a more personal and professional image.
You can also use your personal pop server address to check
your mail. Your pop mail server is set to mail.yourdomain.com.
There is generally a setting in most email clients that ask
for the "pop server".
Shared SSL Space
Use our secure server (https://secure.paradoxwebhosting.com/~yourname/)
to host your order forms or sensitive data. Includes up to
30MB of data storage and Perl/CGI/ASP/PHP support.
phpMyAdmin
Access
Use of phpMyAdmin to administer your MySQL database. It is
located at http://support.paradoxwebhosting.com/phpMyAdmin/.
You will need to use your SQL username and password to access
the system. For more information please visit www.phpmyadmin.net.
